The project

Traffic noise is an important attribute for the design of attractive living spaces. Perception-based prediction of this pollution in urban, development and transport planning offers great potential, but is not yet available. Approaches for the simulation-based prediction of sound propagation already exist. However, realistic mapping of vehicle noise sources including vehicle movement, consideration of the environment and noise reduction measures as well as auralisation of the noise still need to be researched.

A validated tool for the auralisation of road traffic noise in traffic scenarios is therefore to be implemented in BaLSaM. For this purpose, source, transmission and receiver characteristics as well as movement profiles from traffic data and possible noise reduction measures are taken into account. Methods and concepts for simulation as well as human perception are focussed on. The potential to utilise available data from traffic and planning will be demonstrated and published using example scenarios. In future, the tool developed in the project will be used for both the new planning and re-planning of traffic routes for motor vehicles as well as in the development of urban planning concepts in order to offer cyclists, pedestrians and residents a quieter and more pleasant environment.

About the mFUND funding programme of the BMDV

As part of the mFUND innovation initiative, the BMDV has been funding data-based research and development projects for the digital and connected mobility of the future since 2016. Project funding is complemented by active professional networking between stakeholders from politics, business, administration and research. Open data is made available via the Mobilithek. Further information can be found at www.mFUND.de.
