Findings and discussions from our presentations at the AAC

The BaLSaM project has reached another milestone, and we would like to report on our sometimes very diverse content at this year's Aachen Acoustic Colloquium (AAC). We presented a total of three talks in a dedicated BaLSaM session, highlighting different aspects of our research and providing an insight into the diversity of our work.

Carolin Schliephake from ika and Chalotorn Möhlmann from IHTA spoke about the "Holistic Approach for Aurally Accurate Road Traffic Noise Reduction by Adaption of Traffic Routes and Infrastructure Planning." This presentation was primarily dedicated to tyre-road contact as a noise source and investigations to verify the sound propagation simulation.

Moritz Lippold from RHA then presented his lecture on "Urban Noise Protection Measures from the Perspective of Urban Designers - Case Study of the "Gräselberg - Auf den Eichen" Master Plan". In his lecture, he presented the results of the designed residential neighbourhood, which was created with a special focus on acoustic challenges and concepts. As an urban planner, he brought a breath of fresh air and a new perspective to the AAC.

Thiago Lobato from HEAD rounded off the trio of presentations and spoke about "Optimising the Estimation of Vehicle Sound Radiation Characteristics by Combining Numerical Models and Microphone Array Measurements".
The focus here was on a new approach to determining the radiation characteristics of tyre-road noise through a suitable combination of simulation and measurement data.

Participation on site not only enabled us to present our research results, but also to engage in in-depth technical dialogue.In addition to the normal project meetings, there were valuable discussions and personal conversations that further deepened the collaboration within the consortium. We are delighted with the response and interest in our work and look forward to incorporating the findings into the next phase of our project.

The first year of the project is behind us

On Tuesday 21 November, the members of the BaLSaM consortium met at HEAD acoustics in Herzogenrath to share current findings and plan future steps. These discussions are crucial to ensure that we successfully overcome all challenges and achieve the goals we have set ourselves.

A particular highlight was the presentation of our papers for the upcoming AAC (Aachen Acoustics Colloquium) before the actual event on 27 - 29 November. This enables an intensive discourse on the results in order to derive possible points of contact and further tasks. This additional level of collaboration strengthens our research and promotes the exchange of findings within the consortium. After the discussions, we were given a guided tour behind the scenes at HEAD acoustics.

We also successfully completed the first year of our project at the turn of the month in November. This milestone marks an important step in our research journey and we are excited to see what the coming years have in store for the BaLSaM project. We are highly motivated and look forward to the upcoming phases of the BaLSaM project.

Current developments and upcoming highlights

The BaLSaM project is making great strides forward. Our consortium recently met at the IHTA (Institute for High Frequency Technology and Acoustics) for a productive exchange to discuss the progress made by the various project partners. In late summer temperatures, we exchanged ideas and insights that will advance our project.

The upcoming consortium meeting also promises to be exciting. It will take place at HEAD acoustics in Herzogenrath and we are all really looking forward to it. These meetings are crucial for close co-operation between the partners and help us to achieve our research goals efficiently.

We would also like to point out that the BaLSaM project will have its own session at this year's AAC (Aachen Acoustics Colloquium). This is a great opportunity to present our research results and progress to a wider audience. The ika and IHTA will give a joint presentation here, while HEAD acoustics and RHA have each prepared their own presentations. This means that in the end we will be able to present three exciting talks about our still quite young project!

Preparations for this important event are in full swing with all project partners. We are writing scientific papers and preparing captivating presentations to share the groundbreaking findings and advances in vehicle acoustics.

New standards in vehicle acoustics

The BaLSaM project is reaching exciting milestones in vehicle acoustics research. Our latest advances open up exciting insights into the world of traffic noise and thus the acoustic analysis of vehicles.

A significant step in our project is the development of an innovative adapter design for mounting microphones in the immediate vicinity of the tyre. This extension of the microphone positions enables more precise and extensive measurements of tyre noise on different vehicles and has provided valuable information.

Another important focus of our research is the investigation of electric vehicles. In addition to tyre noise measurements, we have concentrated on the "Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System" (AVAS). The AVAS is an acoustic warning system that alerts pedestrians and other road users to the presence of the vehicle at low speeds. Our measurements of the AVAS have enabled us to analyse and evaluate the acoustic properties of this system in different situations and on different vehicles.

At the same time, our project partner, the IHTA (Institute for High Frequency Technology and Acoustics), has analysed the acoustic phenomenon of diffraction using measurement technology. This data is crucial to better understand the propagation of sound in different environments and to develop simulation models.

The BaLSaM project has already made significant progress in vehicle acoustics research. Our advanced measurement methods and collaboration with experts in the field are deepening our understanding of vehicle noise generation. We look forward to further developments and how they will influence the future of transport planning with regard to vehicle noise.

 

Comprehensive testing

In preparation for the extensive tests in the coming days and weeks, the first preliminary acoustic tests were recently carried out on the test track of the Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika).

HEAD acoustics GmbH and the ika equipped two different electric vehicles with measuring equipment and carried out near and far field measurements of tyre/road noise. An acoustic camera for high-precision localisation of the sound sources and microphones on the vehicle were used.

The aim of the measurements is to collect data for models of tyre-road noise. The models are being developed as part of the BaLSaM research project. Together with other models of the dominant vehicle noise sources, data is generated that is used by the Institute of Hearing Technology and Acoustics (IHTA) as the basis for a sound propagation simulation.
